Nigeria loses an estimated $450 million annually to unlawful, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, prompting the Federal Government to associate with Norway to strengthen maritime surveillance and shield the nation’s fisheries sources.
The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr Adegboyega Oyetola, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja when he obtained Norway’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Svein Baera, who launched the Blue Justice initiative.
The programme supplies taking part international locations with free real-time and historic satellite-based Automatic Identification System (AIS) vessel-tracking knowledge to detect suspicious vessel actions, establish vessels evading surveillance and strengthen enforcement in opposition to unlawful fishing.
